Olive-backed Sunbird

Female Olive-backed Sunbird
This is the only Sunbird in Australia.Occupies forest edges, secondary growth, mangroves, parks and gardens.

They can be found as singles, or pairs and occasionally in small groups. When breeding  they are strongly territorial with much displaying and vocal pursuit in flight. Feeds on nectar and invertebrates gleaned from nooks and crannies, these birds do hover briefly.
Readily foraging around man made structures, methodically works barbed wire checking barbs for hidden prey.

This picture was taken from a hidden watch just off of my patio.
As you can see the nest is a very distinctive, pendulous structure that took about two weeks to build. Made from fibrous material and spiders web it was amazing to watch the male and female working together to build it.

The nest is rebuilt in another spot every year, I now have about 4 structures dotted around my property, and it's highly likely they are the same couple each year.

It is a joy to watch from a distance, when the chick arrives, how the pair work continuously to feed it, and then as it gets older and stronger, to watch it fly away.
